Dell Technologies World 2018, here I come!

It’s that time of the year again: Las Vegas time! This year I once again got an invite from Dell EMC to visit this yearly conference. It’s less than two weeks before the event, but I already have a full agenda: from networking with the Dutch in the “Dutch Delegation” to a super secret meeting with the Dell EMC Customer Council and maybe even some interviews!

Remember last year? Well, here’s a quote of mine as a reminder:

Let’s see if we can do some more of that this year ūüėČ

So what are my plans this time?

I’m very lucky to get a direct flight for once. I’ll be flying from K√∂ln this time on a Saturday and it’s a direct flight as well! I’ll be traveling with a few colleagues of mine and some of them are DT World / Las Vegas virgins, so that’s going to be a culture shock for them!! Anyway, we’re here to help them get through it all in one piece so they’ll get the most efficient use of their time during one of the most interesting technology events this year.

What are my expectations and plans for this year? Well, I’m always looking out for big announcements, like the mega launch back in 2013 with the VNX2 in Milan or any other really cool new products. And it’s been a while since we had a really cool announcement. I’m hoping for news on a possible merger between the Dell SC-series and EMC Unity. There’s much to improve in that area, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed for that. And when was the last time we got a new VMAX? That must have been back in 2014 or so! Unity was in 2016, XtremeIO X2 was in 2017, but where did DSSD go? Every competitor now has NVMe storage, but what about legacy EMC products? I’m expecting a lot in this area and “in memory computing” as well. There was a lot going on back in 2014, but the hype is over, or is it? I’m dying to see new developments in the flash side of things. Will flash finally be able to catch up to the current CPU speeds and remove SAAB (storage as a bottleneck)?

So what does my agenda look like?

Saturday April 28

  • Flying on Saturday afternoon April 28 and checking in in the Linq hotel
  • Hanging out, have dinner and try to stay awake until 10 or 11PM
  • A subset of the Open Line delegation is going to a party athe the Hakkasan at MGM Grand, but I’m skipping that. It starts at 10:30 PM and with the 9 hour time difference and the very busy week ahead, that’s a tad too much for me. I’m getting old, yes, I know.

Sunday April 29

  • Sleeping a bit late on Sunday, get breakfast and get ready for the first Dutch Delegation activity: Scooter ride throught Red Rock Canyon
  • I’m skipping the BBQ under the stars in Red Rock canyon because of the…
  • Customer Reference group appreciation event at the TopGolf

Free EMC trial software / virtual appliances

virtual machine

A quick heads-up this time about building your own lab environment

Sometimes you just want to run a VNX, Avamar, PowerPath, Data Domain or Isilon as a virtual machine to see how things work, or to write work instructions. And EMC offers a lot of these virtual appliances for free!

EMC World 2016: what to do? There’s not enough time, that’s for sure!

Las Vegas

Will this be the last EMC World ever? I can’t imagine that.

Some say this year will be the final EMC World. Ever. But then again, there might not be another Dell world either. Not in this format anyway. Will EMC World continue in another format, or will it be called DEll/EMC World? Maybe EMC/Dell World? Or just World? No, that doesn’t make sense at all.

Anyway,

let’s think out loud about EMC World 2016

What’s going on from May 2 to May 5?

EMC World 2016: the Dutch edition

Fremont street

Juist: op EMC World in Las Vegas!! Wissel ervaringen uit met andere klanten, maak kennis met (Nederlandse) partners en filosofeer met EMC specialisten over nieuwe mogelijkheden of maak gewoon die overstap naar het derde platform in IT.

The EMC / Dell merger: my tears and thoughts

Dell EMC

It’s been a few weeks now since Mr Dell, Silver Lake and MSD Partners announced they want to take over EMC and with that become the world’s largest privately held IT company. For me I relived the whole HP / Compaq merger and at that time Compaq was my favorite company. My whole world collapsed. What was going to happen to¬†the¬†world I lived in? It was going to disappear! But luckily it did not. The best pieces of Compaq at the time, their servers, were simply rebranded and sold as HP Proliants and the Alpha CPU “suddenly” appeared as the Itanium from Intel. And everybody was happy. Well, sort of. At least the server department kept on delivering what they were famous for.

And now this happened

I never realized Michael Dell was even in a position to actually raise that kind of money. But with help from Silver Lake and MSD Partners he succeeded to raise sixty five Billion US Dollars! Just imagine! Oh, wouldn’t I like to get my hands on a small portion of that!! But that’s a whole other story. Forget the money, forget the stock exchange market: what will this mean for both companies and the people working there? As some of you know, I’m involved with¬†both the EMC education department as well as the customer facing piece of EMC Support and I want to share my¬†thoughts on the future of my current “Compaq” equivalent, aka “EMC”.

EMC World 2014: short week and too much to do

EMC World 2014

It’s that time of the year again: EMC World

15 Thousand nerds gathering in Las Vegas for the yearly week of EMC propaganda. That’s what a lot of people might think it is anyway. It’s the 2014th edition… that doesn’t sound right. Ehm, oh well, you get my drift. Well, maybe it is nerd-week, but hey: every vendor who thinks they’re the best in something is doing this sort of events and besides that, it’s a great event to meet people you haven’t seen in a year or so.

Social networking in real life

Social networking, gathering knowledge of things to come, looking for solutions to challenges you already have in your normal day jobs, looking for insights in things on your wish list. Bacon, unicorns, hardware and a loooot of “software”, since that’s the trend since a few years. No matter how you explain it:

IT is in Las Vegas, baby!

EMC World 2013 – day 2

EMC World 2013, day 2

Being one of the Elect has its advantages. And so I watched the whole Tucci keynote show from our exclusive lounge area and I wasn’t the only one. I guess about 10 or 15 other Elect members had the exact same idea and saw it all on our wide screen tv. Sipping from a double espresso, enjoying the show. It was all about transforming. Again. Wasn’t that what last year was about too? Well, this time it’s about transforming the organisation to be prepared for the cloud. Everything at EMC World is about software defined storage and cloud and getting certified for all that.

Super hero the XYZ men
