Dell EMC World 2016 Austin, TX, USA

Dell EMC World 2016

You’ve all heard the news last week (at least, I think you did): On September 7 the huge merger between Dell and EMC took place, making the Dell Technologies transaction the biggest technology company integration in history! So the digital transformation is really here, and Dell Technologies / Dell EMC is leading the way. From October 18 to 20, Dell EMC will host business and IT leaders from around the world for the biggest enterprise technology event of the year, Dell EMC World 2016 in Austin, Texas. And I received an invite to join the EMC Elect and Dell Rock Stars to report on the news that Michael Dell and others will bring us. Many thanks go to Mark Browne, who made sure EMC Elect people were invited to be present at this event. We’ll be in super secret influencer meetings, sneak peek preview breakfasts and we’ll be sitting in a reserved seat section to watch Michael Dell perform on stage! Yeah, I’m pretty excited! After being invited to the VNX2 launch in Milan in 2013, I’m once again present at a major event as part of the EMC Elect.

EMC Unity: simplicity redefined

EMC Unity

It’s been a while since the VNX2 was born: September 2013, I remember it very well. Being a part of the EMC Elect, I was invited to be at the actual launch in Milan (Italy) and what a ride it was! The whole launch was wrapped around Formula 1 technology and it sure was “speed 2 lead“. That “old” VNX2, which I’m still perfectly happy with by the way, was a revolution in my humble opinion: multi-core everything, in short MCx. And yes, it was like everything just went faster, smoother and better.

New technologies

But with new technologies popping up every so many months now, it was time for a new mid-range storage array. Flash storage isn’t a novelty anymore, it’s a must! And the “old” hybrid arrays were fine, but needed some fine-tuning. With flash devices growing bigger every quarter or half a year and faster as well, the whole back-end needed an upgrade. The old 6 Gb back-end (x4) needed an upgrade.

A list of (social) activities during EMC World in Las Vegas 2016

Las Vegas

It’s a list of activities. No big story or my thoughts on it, it’s just a list and yes, there’s a lot of overlap. I’ll be editing this list when more events come to my attention, so keep an eye on this blog post at all times!

I’ll list as much activities as are known to me, but feel free to add comments to this post and I’ll edit any unlisted events to the list asap!

EMC World 2016: what to do? There’s not enough time, that’s for sure!

Las Vegas

Will this be the last EMC World ever? I can’t imagine that.

Some say this year will be the final EMC World. Ever. But then again, there might not be another Dell world either. Not in this format anyway. Will EMC World continue in another format, or will it be called DEll/EMC World? Maybe EMC/Dell World? Or just World? No, that doesn’t make sense at all.

Anyway,

let’s think out loud about EMC World 2016

What’s going on from May 2 to May 5?

EMC World 2016: the Dutch edition

Fremont street

Juist: op EMC World in Las Vegas!! Wissel ervaringen uit met andere klanten, maak kennis met (Nederlandse) partners en filosofeer met EMC specialisten over nieuwe mogelijkheden of maak gewoon die overstap naar het derde platform in IT.

Announcing the EMC Elect 2016!

EMC Elect 2016

Another year has past and what a great year it was. A lot has happened, both personal and work related. The whole Dell / EMC merger made many think about the future once again and I must say it’s going to be an interesting year. I’m very much looking forward to EMC World, this May, as Michael Dell, Dave Goulden and Joe Tucci will make their appearance in the opening keynote. I think that I’ll be present in the big hall for once, even though the EMC Elect lounge has proven to be a wonderful and relaxed place to experience the keynote. And yes, that’s just one of the advantages of being EMC Elect: you’ll get to enter the realms of this small and privileged group of people.

On the EMC Community Network (aka ECN) you will find the latest and complete list of the EMC Elect 2016.

Thank you EMC, for making me part of this group again!!

The EMC / Dell merger: my tears and thoughts

Dell EMC

It’s been a few weeks now since Mr Dell, Silver Lake and MSD Partners announced they want to take over EMC and with that become the world’s largest privately held IT company. For me I relived the whole HP / Compaq merger and at that time Compaq was my favorite company. My whole world collapsed. What was going to happen to the world I lived in? It was going to disappear! But luckily it did not. The best pieces of Compaq at the time, their servers, were simply rebranded and sold as HP Proliants and the Alpha CPU “suddenly” appeared as the Itanium from Intel. And everybody was happy. Well, sort of. At least the server department kept on delivering what they were famous for.

And now this happened

I never realized Michael Dell was even in a position to actually raise that kind of money. But with help from Silver Lake and MSD Partners he succeeded to raise sixty five Billion US Dollars! Just imagine! Oh, wouldn’t I like to get my hands on a small portion of that!! But that’s a whole other story. Forget the money, forget the stock exchange market: what will this mean for both companies and the people working there? As some of you know, I’m involved with both the EMC education department as well as the customer facing piece of EMC Support and I want to share my thoughts on the future of my current “Compaq” equivalent, aka “EMC”.

Want to play around with VMware VVOLs? Here’s your chance! The Software Defined VNX is here!

Hard Drive

VMware now has this great new feature to be more in control of where its data blocks actually land on the storage system: VVOLs. But up until now EMC didn’t have a system capable of actually providing the back end for that. Until now I said. Starting with the VNXe 3200 all storage arrays are made vVOL capable and you can play around with that yourself. FOR FREE!

The Software Defined VNX is now a reality!

EMC World 2015: my plans for the week (thinking out loud)

Las Vegas

It’s that time of the year again: EMC World in Las Vegas, which takes place from May 4 to May 7. And this year I’m not going unprepared again. So I made a list of do’s and don’ts, so I can more easily pick the best way to spend my precious time. Are YOU going too?

So what’s my week about?

When I arrive in Vegas after having 2 layovers in London and Dallas, I’m probably half asleep. Because of the 9 hour time difference I’m sure I will sleep at very odd hours and be awake at even worse hours. I just hope I’m not sleepwalking through the casino, since I don’t even like gambling. Although it would be funny to wake up, finding out that I’ve won a few grand, right? My stay in Sin City will start with a packed two days filled with meetings. Yes: working on the Saturday and Sunday: it’s all part of the game! And that day I already have a meeting conflict, but the week will have plenty of opportunity to catch up with old friends, so I’m not worried there.

EMC World 2014: short week and too much to do

EMC World 2014

It’s that time of the year again: EMC World

15 Thousand nerds gathering in Las Vegas for the yearly week of EMC propaganda. That’s what a lot of people might think it is anyway. It’s the 2014th edition… that doesn’t sound right. Ehm, oh well, you get my drift. Well, maybe it is nerd-week, but hey: every vendor who thinks they’re the best in something is doing this sort of events and besides that, it’s a great event to meet people you haven’t seen in a year or so.

Social networking in real life

Social networking, gathering knowledge of things to come, looking for solutions to challenges you already have in your normal day jobs, looking for insights in things on your wish list. Bacon, unicorns, hardware and a loooot of “software”, since that’s the trend since a few years. No matter how you explain it:

IT is in Las Vegas, baby!

EMC World 2014: Dutch Delegation

EMC World 2014

First thoughts on EMC World 2014

Are you planning on going to EMC World in 2014? The attending Dutch people (or people working for a Dutch company) are in for a treat. Once again EMC Netherlands offers the so-called “Dutch Delegation” package. In short this means that EMC NL organizes several events during the week where you can gather with other Dutch speaking customers during a field trip, dinner or hanging out at a bar.

The full program is:

  • Round-trip to Las Vegas*
  • Stays at the Venetian hotel in Las Vegas**
  • Transfers from airport to the hotel and back (afterwards)
  • Field trip ‘Valley of Fire Jeep tour’ on Sunday May 4
  • Dutch Delegation welcome reception at Serendipity 3, Caesars Palace Hotel & Casino on Sunday evening May 4
  • Two Dutch drinks; evening in the V-Bar and the Zebra Lounge on Wednesday the 7 and Thursday the 8th of May
  • Visit to the show ‘Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson One’, including dinner at RM Seafood on Tuesday evening May 6
  • Possibility to go shopping in a real American shopping mall (Fry’s)
  • EMC World 2014 reminder
  • Reunion-afternoon in the Netherlands

* And ** are optional

More details can be found on http://www.jibe-group.com/nl/marketing-services/emc-world-2014-dutch-delegation

In 2012 the Sunday field trip was a really nice helicopter flight through the Grand Canyon starting at the Grand Canyon Ranch including a BBQ-lunch.

In 2013 the Sunday field trip included a boat experience on the Colorado river.

And in 2014 it’s going to be a visit to the “Valley of Fire National Park”. I visited the “VoF” in 2013 and it was amazing! Check out my photos in this post!

See you there?

Cisco anounces their Data center Champions for 2014

Cisco Champions badge

Cisco Data center Champions 2014

Just like other big IT names like VMware with their vExpert, Microsoft with their MVP and since last year EMC with their Elect, now Cisco started their own community appreciation program called Cisco Champions. I want to focus on Data center Champions in particular since that’s the business I’m in myself. I’m not (much) into Cisco Data center networking technologies myself (yet), other than SAN related Fibre Channel equipment, but I’d like to dedicate this post to the start of this new community appreciation program nevertheless. The “community” is all that matters these days, right? Sharing knowledge to enhance the community “brain” as a whole. Being part of the 10 original founders of the EMC Elect I know how important proper communication can be for new programs like this and since Amy Lewis was kind enough to invite Allen Ward, Sergey Kamenetskiy and myself to shine in one of the “Engineers Unplugged” series in May 2013 in Las Vegas during EMC World, I thought, let’s return the favor and promote the Cisco Champions a bit, hoping for more collaboration and improvement of the awareness that even though social networking is some way of “virtual presence to people you might not even know”,  if your network is large enough it can also be seen as your online think-tank.

Las Vegas 2013 – the Valley of Fire

Friday May 10: Valley of Fire

We discussed it on ECN since February I think and I managed to get 2 more people interested in taking this trip with me: Allen Ward and Mark Browne. Since it was only an hour North of Las Vegas we decided not to start the day too early and we had a small but tasty little breakfast at “Cafe Presse”, next to the V-bar (there are more than 1 in the Venetian/Palazzo building). We rented a VW Jetta (I think) and we drove off to our little 1 day adventure. The more we drove away from Vegas, the more the desert and its heat impressed us. It took about half an hour to reach the highway exit and another half an hour on a bumpy road to reach the National Park entry point. The sight was amazing. Red rock everywhere you looked, but also red, grey and I even spotted some blue and yellow.Valley of Fire

Las Vegas 2013 – the way back home

Saturday May 11

To end my little diary about my 2013 trip to Las Vegas the final weekend started with checking out of Harrah’s, a hotel which I got to like. It’s not that bad at all and it’s reasonably prized and it’s right in the middle of the action, since it’s next to the Venetian. But my favorite will always be the Venetian of course! That one is a class of its own.

McCarran

Oh well, after checking out, getting in the shuttle and a nice chat with the driver I ended up at McCarran airport, 5 hours too early, but this is the thing with me: on departure day I can’t enjoy the sights anymore and I just want to go home as quickly as possible and being on the airport is as close as I can get, so there I was. Luckily I had my iPad all charged up and I had a nice long Facetime chat with Anna and Elisa. For them it was already Saturday evening 20:00 or so. It was a bit hazy where to check in: British Airways or American Airlines. The ticket said BA, operated by AA and indeed: AA it was. I checked in my luggage and visited the little airport museum upstairs to kill some time. After take off it was “goodbye LV, hope to see you again next year”. We’ll see what happens.

Los Angeles

A drinkThe title suggests a lot, but in fact I only had a 3 hour stop at LAX. We flew South from Las Vegas towards Primm, which I visited 2 days before, and then crossing the hills towards LA. We landed in a little fog, but I managed to see the “Hollywood” letters on the Hollywood Hills as well as the LA city skyscrapers. To my surprise my arrival gate and my departure gate were only 6 gates or so apart from each other and since WiFi worked just fine I found myself making updates to Facebook and Twitter a bit. My flight back to Europe was supposed to be a 747 and to my surprise the information said it was a 777. Well, I didn’t think too much of it until it dawned on me that the departure time didn’t check out as well.

Wrong Gate

Flying over a bit of the Pacific OceanI was at the wrong gate! With only 1 hour left I rushed to get more information, but that’s something I disliked about that airport: no clear directions anywhere. So I went outside, asked a cab driver and found my way to the next pier. Going through security again was nerve wrecking, but I got to my gate on time without any problems. This time I was able to relax.

We took off, headed for London Heathrow and that gave me a chance to get some sleep. To my surprise we headed South at first and we didn’t fly over the Grand Canyon as I was hoping for. So right after diner I tried to watch some movies, but with the chair in front of me leaning backwards plus the fact that the earplugs weren’t of a decent quality this was undoable. I fell asleep.

Europe

I woke up right before we entered Irish airspace. So that proves that I can sleep just about anywhere. Sometimes it’s a good thing, sometimes not so much since I have a history of falling asleep on my own birthday, a visit to our neighbors, friends, in cars, buses, planes, even in a Novell course I took in 2000 when I fell asleep on my table, right in front of the instructor!

London - BrentfordAnyway… Seeing British airspace again and flying over London and seeing European style houses made me feel at home, even if I was still hours from home. My layover on Heathrow was only 90 minutes and although the transfer from the one plane to the next seemed fast at first I totally forgot the fact that I needed to go through security again. Luckily the friendly people in front of me were willing to let me pass and I made it in time to the next gate.

The last part of the trip from the UK to Germany was a piece of cake. Only about an hour or so and somewhere in the afternoon of Sunday the 12th I arrived on the main land. I called my wife and daughter and let them know I was close. The search for the exact place where I left my car was a bit of a challenge since I forgot where I wrote down on what spot it was, but while walking to the parking garage I found a note in my agenda on my phone. After a 1 hour drive home my trip to Las Vegas 2013 came to an end. And a successful trip it was, social networking related that is.

Thank you all

I’d like to thank all old and new friends that I enjoyed my stay with you and I hope we will meet again!!

EMC World 2013 – day 4

A little late, but better late than never. This last EMC World post has been sitting in my drafts, knowing two of my coleagues already posted theirs about the exact same thing that I wanted to talk about. And since I don’t want to play copy cat, I’m going to refer to their posts. That seems the best thing to do.

EMC World 2013, day 4

Thursday is traditionally (half) a day to say goodbye to the many old and new friends, visit some last day sessions, leave the hotel and head back to the airport, but this year I planned ahead and I decided to stay a bit longer for some quality time with the EMC Elect: My plane wouldn’t leave until Saturday afternoon!! I had to switch hotels though from the fancy and luxurious Venetian to the hotel next door “Harrah’s”. It’s a huge step down, but Harrah’s does what it’s supposed to do and that’s offering me a bed to sleep.

EMC World 2013 – day 3

EMC World 2013, day 3

Breakfast

Sergey and RobWednesday started with breakfast in the great food room in the basement. I don’t know any other name for this enormous place. And for the second time this week I ran into Sergey on my way there. I think he was following me around, I’m not sure. Hmmmm.

Engineers unplugged

The whole day Amy Lewis (@CommsNinja) was running around preparing for her “engineers unplugged” video shoots and white board sessions in the EMC Elect lounge. Read more »
