The king is dead, long live the king: Dell EMC Elect is born!

Dell EMC Elect

Now that Dell and EMC have merged, both advocacy programs have ended as well. No more Dell Rockstar and EMC Elect, but a brand “new” program has emerged!!

As an EMC Elect founder I loved being part of the EMC Elect from the very beginning in Q4 of 2012, but times are changing and a new era has started: I guess that’s how life changes as well and this time it was a good change! The advocacy program we’ve all been proud of, whether that was the Dell Rockstar or the EMC Elect, was booming! I can only speak of the Elect and being able to talk to people about it, as a real advocate should be doing, was great.

Dell EMC World 2016 Austin, TX, USA

Dell EMC World 2016

You’ve all heard the news last week (at least, I think you did): On September 7 the huge merger between Dell and EMC took place, making the Dell Technologies transaction the biggest technology company integration in history! So the digital transformation is really here, and Dell Technologies / Dell EMC is leading the way. From October 18 to 20, Dell EMC will host business and IT leaders from around the world for the biggest enterprise technology event of the year, Dell EMC World 2016 in Austin, Texas. And I received an invite to join the EMC Elect and Dell Rock Stars to report on the news that Michael Dell and others will bring us. Many thanks go to Mark Browne, who made sure EMC Elect people were invited to be present at this event. We’ll be in super secret influencer meetings, sneak peek preview breakfasts and we’ll be sitting in a reserved seat section to watch Michael Dell perform on stage! Yeah, I’m pretty excited! After being invited to the VNX2 launch in Milan in 2013, I’m once again present at a major event as part of the EMC Elect.

Free EMC trial software / virtual appliances

virtual machine

A quick heads-up this time about building your own lab environment

Sometimes you just want to run a VNX, Avamar, PowerPath, Data Domain or Isilon as a virtual machine to see how things work, or to write work instructions. And EMC offers a lot of these virtual appliances for free!

Take a look at these:

EMC World 2016: what to do? There’s not enough time, that’s for sure!

Las Vegas

Will this be the last EMC World ever? I can’t imagine that.

Some say this year will be the final EMC World. Ever. But then again, there might not be another Dell world either. Not in this format anyway. Will EMC World continue in another format, or will it be called DEll/EMC World? Maybe EMC/Dell World? Or just World? No, that doesn’t make sense at all.

Anyway,

let’s think out loud about EMC World 2016

What’s going on from May 2 to May 5?

EMC World 2016: the Dutch edition

Fremont street

Juist: op EMC World in Las Vegas!! Wissel ervaringen uit met andere klanten, maak kennis met (Nederlandse) partners en filosofeer met EMC specialisten over nieuwe mogelijkheden of maak gewoon die overstap naar het derde platform in IT.

Announcing the EMC Elect 2016!

EMC Elect 2016

Another year has past and what a great year it was. A lot has happened, both personal and work related. The whole Dell / EMC merger made many think about the future once again and I must say it’s going to be an interesting year. I’m very much looking forward to EMC World, this May, as Michael Dell, Dave Goulden and Joe Tucci will make their appearance in the opening keynote. I think that I’ll be present in the big hall for once, even though the EMC Elect lounge has proven to be a wonderful and relaxed place to experience the keynote. And yes, that’s just one of the advantages of being EMC Elect: you’ll get to enter the realms of this small and privileged group of people.

On the EMC Community Network (aka ECN) you will find the latest and complete list of the EMC Elect 2016.

Thank you EMC, for making me part of this group again!!

The EMC / Dell merger: my tears and thoughts

Dell EMC

It’s been a few weeks now since Mr Dell, Silver Lake and MSD Partners announced they want to take over EMC and with that become the world’s largest privately held IT company. For me I relived the whole HP / Compaq merger and at that time Compaq was my favorite company. My whole world collapsed. What was going to happen to the world I lived in? It was going to disappear! But luckily it did not. The best pieces of Compaq at the time, their servers, were simply rebranded and sold as HP Proliants and the Alpha CPU “suddenly” appeared as the Itanium from Intel. And everybody was happy. Well, sort of. At least the server department kept on delivering what they were famous for.

And now this happened

I never realized Michael Dell was even in a position to actually raise that kind of money. But with help from Silver Lake and MSD Partners he succeeded to raise sixty five Billion US Dollars! Just imagine! Oh, wouldn’t I like to get my hands on a small portion of that!! But that’s a whole other story. Forget the money, forget the stock exchange market: what will this mean for both companies and the people working there? As some of you know, I’m involved with both the EMC education department as well as the customer facing piece of EMC Support and I want to share my thoughts on the future of my current “Compaq” equivalent, aka “EMC”.

Why securing devices using your fingerprint is not safe

fingerprint

Think about it: fingerprints are unique. Everybody has them and every one of them is unique, so it’s a secure way to prove your identity, right?

WRONG!

We all thought that passwords were easily hackable, if not by guessing, by brute force attacks. And we all know the “difficult” passwords: P@$$w0rd123 and 3AsyD03s1T. As if hackers are stupid! They’re not! Believe it or not, but these so called encrypted, but still “readable” passwords are easy to guess, just like your dog’s name and your mother’s birthday. I mean, a dog’s name is Bello, Spot, Rex, Fluffy or a dozen other names and as for birthdays: we only have to try every date since 1-1-1900, which is roughly only 115 x 365 = 42,000 dates which are there to try.

Cisco Smart zoning – part II: examples

Smart zoning examples

In my smart zoning post from last February I already presented the way to get started with Cisco smart zoning. I initially planned to give a more detailed calculation on how much time you can save if you were using smart zoning compared to SIST zoning.

SAN fabric

I was talking to an EMC SAN instructor (Richard Butler) this week and after I did a little white boarding and used my hands to picture how massive a traditional SIST zone environment would be, we agreed smart zoning is the way to go.

Nominate your candidate(s) for the 2016 batch of EMC Elect!

EMC Elect 2016 nominations are open

It’s that time of year again: the nominations for the community heroes that might become part of the EMC Elect group of next year.

EMC Elect Nominations for 2016

The nominations can be sent in by anybody who wants to honor their community hero. What’s considered a community hero? To be recognized as EMC Elect candidate you could think about how you represented EMC throughout 2015. Well, represented is not the right word, since you don’t really represent EMC, but if you write or talk about EMC on ECN, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, or you are a speaker in public accessible forums or events, or write blogs about EMC equipment or software, you certainly are a candidate to be nominated.

Can you nominate yourself?

Why not? It’s not about who nominates who, but who gets nominated! And it’s not a contest! Only 1 nomination will do just fine. It has no added value to nominate somebody more than once! In the end the judges will look at your curriculum anyway and what you did during this year, so it’s perfectly fine to mention this to EMC yourself! Go ahead, make a nomination, or two, or five. Get the word out and make sure we get as many nominations as possible. The judges will decide who gets in after the current month.

Nominations can be done from November 1, 2015 to November 30, 2015, so don’t wait too long and let’s all nominate!!!

EMC World 2015: my plans for the week (thinking out loud)

Las Vegas

It’s that time of the year again: EMC World in Las Vegas, which takes place from May 4 to May 7. And this year I’m not going unprepared again. So I made a list of do’s and don’ts, so I can more easily pick the best way to spend my precious time. Are YOU going too?

So what’s my week about?

When I arrive in Vegas after having 2 layovers in London and Dallas, I’m probably half asleep. Because of the 9 hour time difference I’m sure I will sleep at very odd hours and be awake at even worse hours. I just hope I’m not sleepwalking through the casino, since I don’t even like gambling. Although it would be funny to wake up, finding out that I’ve won a few grand, right? My stay in Sin City will start with a packed two days filled with meetings. Yes: working on the Saturday and Sunday: it’s all part of the game! And that day I already have a meeting conflict, but the week will have plenty of opportunity to catch up with old friends, so I’m not worried there.

EMC Elect 2015: who is on the list this year?

EMC Elect 2015

EMC Elect 2015

And then there were 102

A little bit later than usual, but the list has been made public. I want to stress that again this year every single person on the list was chosen because of their contribution to the community in 2014, whether that’s Twitter, a personal blog site, ECN (EMC Community Network), speaking in public or any other form of knowledge transfer of EMC products or services to the public community. Did I say public? Yes: every single person on the list has made an immense effort in trying to reach a broad audience. The most common ways to evangelize knowledge about EMC “stuff” are probably Twitter, ECN and blogging, but any other form of doing so is highly appreciated.

EMC Elect 2015 nominations are open!

The events in which the EMC Elect 2014 are participating are still in full swing and although a lot of people aren’t thinking about 2015 yet, some of you might have wondered when the nominations for 2015 will start.

Last year the nominations for 2014 were opened at around EMC World ’13, but as of today you can nominate your community “hero” (or more than one) to become EMC Elect 2015. Symmetrix offers a new kind of MAXimum Virtualisation (VMAX)

100-200-400K

The mother of all arrays has just been given an upgrade!

Well ok, maybe EMC did not produce the mother, since it’s fair to say IBM 3390 disk subsystem came first, but since the first Symmetrix came out in the early 90s with as much as a dozen or two disks, EMC has come a long way. They set the standard when it came to enterprise storage arrays. And it wasn’t just size that mattered back then: performance was and is still the number one objective for the Symms. After the “dark ages” (roughly before the year 2000) things got serious with the DMX series in 2003. The number of disks went up and loads of cache had to make sure that performance was guaranteed. DMX1, DMX2, DMX3/4 were quite a success.

And then there was VMAX

EMC Elect 2014 summer event

EMC Elect 2014 summer event!

What if the Elect members from the Belgium/Netherlands/Germany(/UK)(/France) area would come together in a somewhat centralized place like, for example, in a fun park? It would have nothing to do with “Geek Talk” and everything with having a bit of fun. How would you respond to an initiative like that?

Please respond by replying to this post (or in the original post on ECN) and maybe we can actually do something together. With family, without, with some food-related event afterwards, without, please speak up and we will figure out something cool to do the summer!!!

My first thought was to visit the number 3 nicest fun park in Europe (in 2012 I think) called “the Efteling” (www.efteling.com. For those who don’t know the park, it’s all about fairy tales, or at least that’s how it all started in 1952. Nowadays there’s still the magic forest for those with small children, but also some thrill rides and even a few nice relaxing rides like the “Fata Morgana” or the “Droomvlucht” will take your breath away. And for those who think the Las Vegas Bellagio Fountains are sooooo beautiful, you haven’t seen anything yet! The recently built “Aquanura” uses music, fire and different colors or light compared to the monochrome water in Vegas.

Afterwards we could eat something on the park or somewhere offsite (any ideas?)

So make yourself heard and let us know what you think of this.

Who am I targeting for this event? Dutch, Belgian, German Elect members are obvious, but English, Irish or French are welcome too. But if somebody is on vacation here from any other country, they are welcome too, just make sure to make yourself heard.

On ECN I’ve created a little table in which you can fill out any details if you want to participate. Large comments or suggestions should be in a reply to that post, dates and small comments can be put in the table.

EMC World 2014: short week and too much to do

EMC World 2014

It’s that time of the year again: EMC World

15 Thousand nerds gathering in Las Vegas for the yearly week of EMC propaganda. That’s what a lot of people might think it is anyway. It’s the 2014th edition… that doesn’t sound right. Ehm, oh well, you get my drift. Well, maybe it is nerd-week, but hey: every vendor who thinks they’re the best in something is doing this sort of events and besides that, it’s a great event to meet people you haven’t seen in a year or so.

Social networking in real life

Social networking, gathering knowledge of things to come, looking for solutions to challenges you already have in your normal day jobs, looking for insights in things on your wish list. Bacon, unicorns, hardware and a loooot of “software”, since that’s the trend since a few years. No matter how you explain it:

IT is in Las Vegas, baby!

Storage Field Day 5 – what’s happening?

Storage Field Day 5

Suddenly, I received this tweet. Something about Tech Field Day, Storage Field Day. What? Ok, I actually met Stephen Foskett last year in Las Vegas and I know Gabrie Van Zanten, a colleague of mine, visited the TFD event. Also Roy Mikes, another friend of mine attended the event in the past. I had a decent share of information about the event, but it was still no surprise that I was honored by the invitation I received.

Software Defined Data Center Symposium

The first full day the delegates will attend the SDDC Symposium in Santa Clara. On April 22 the whole day is for discussions of OpenFlow, software-defined networking (SDN), software-defined storage, converged infrastructure, and the greater software-defined future! I’m quite curious who will be there, what we can discuss about and the depth in which discussions will go, but I guess I’ll have to see and find out. It’s exciting for sure!

The actual SFD5 event Read more »

Software-Defined Data Center Symposium 2014

SDDC 2014

Tech Field Day plans SDDC Symposium

Being part of the SFD5 gang I was invited to join the Software-Defined Datacenter Symposium as well! This event will feature many key figures from the industry and end-user community, and will include discussions of OpenFlow, software-defined networking (SDN), software-defined storage, converged infrastructure, and the greater software-defined future!

Note that the event capacity is severely constrained. Therefore, the SDDC Symposium is focusing on end-user implementors and encouraging others to participate online by viewing the live video stream on this page!
